The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides | Book Review by Rohan Biswas | Phoenix

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides |
Psychological Thriller 📌
The book revolves around a famous painter, Alicia Berenson, who is found guilty of murdering her husband, Gabriel and has since refused to speak a single word. Theo, a psychotherapist, becomes obsessed with her case and takes up the challenge to try and get Alicia to speak.

This is really a painful book. Once you have read the book you'll realise The Silent Patient is actually about two different individuals, where both can be considered as patients. One remains silent throughout the story, Alicia, and the other one is Theo who has a different story to tell. As readers, we get to know a lot about both their lives and how much pain both of them suffered. Alicia kept a record of her day-to-day activities and her feelings in a diary. This diary of hers has a lot to say about her mental health at present when she was under Theo's treatment. Both had a different lifestyle, a different story. Alicia had Gabriel, Theo has Kathy. But there's a twist at the far end waiting.

The story is gripping. There are many characters present. Each page, each chapter, each character has its own significance. Almost every chapter ends with some sort of surprise to the reader and it becomes hard to keep the book down once you have started reading. While reading the book, all I ever felt was pain. This book brings with it tremendous amount of pain as you slowly get attached with the two main protagonists and get to know their feelings and how much they were neglected, how much they were hurt, hurt by their own people. You might end up crying. It's that painful. Also, it's kind of a murder mystery at times. There will arrive a moment where you will get determined to know why Alicia killed her husband. And then the book will again keep you guessing whether it was really Alicia who killed her husband at the first place.. The ending is remarkable. This book is excellent and is a must-read...
